Virgin Atlantic has launched flights between London and Sydney, precipitating what Sir Richard Branson believes will be a price war between carriers.
Virgin will be competing with around a dozen other airlines for the route, including British Airways-Qantas. This could mean lower prices for travellers to Australia.
Virgin claims to have cheaper economy fares on the Sydney route than BA-Qantas and superior luxury facilities. The carrier will extend its existent Hong Kong route to Australia's main city.
Sir Richard, the Virgin Atlantic chairman said: "Finally, British Airways and Qantas will have competition on the London-Hong Kong-Sydney route. Inevitably, there will be a price war. Prices will definitely come down dramatically.
Virgin will use Airbus A340-600 aircraft on the route, but plans to use Airbus A380 'superjumbos' from 2008. The carrier may increase capacity by using Boeing 747s or adding a second daily service.
Sir Richard Branson pledged to double passengers in five years and vowed to compete with BA on all its profitable long-haul routes.
