BAA Scotland has today (Monday 10 January 2005) welcomed the announcement by Continental Airlines that it is to significantly increase capacity on their flights between Scotland and New York.
Donal Dowds, Managing Director of BAA Scotland, said:
"This announcement is good news, not only for Scottish travellers, who last year visited the United States in record numbers, but als for Scotland's tourist industry.
"The US is a key market for business and leisure travel from Scotland, particularly New York, so we're delighted that Continental is increasing frequency and capacity on its flights from Scotland's two main airports.
"This announcement also represents a welcome boost for Scottish tourism, and we'll be working closely with Continental and the Scottish tourism industry to market this improved service to US travellers. The Scots have a great affinity with America and that's reflected across the Atlantic, where demand for flights to Scotland has never been higher.
He added: "In less than a year, Scotland has gone from having one daily flight to New York to three. That can only be good news for Scottish business and tourism."
In 2004, over 380,000 passengers travelled between Scotland and the United States through Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports. This represented a 52% increase on the previous year, due to the launch of extra flights from both Glasgow and Edinburgh. In addition to Continental, US Airways offer seasonal flights from Glasgow to Philadelphia, whereas American Airlines offer seasonal flights to Chicago from Glasgow.
A wide range of charter flights are also available to Toronto and Orlando from both Glasgow International and Edinbrug Airports. Continental Airlines began flying direct from Glasgow in 1998. A new service was launched from Edinburgh in June 2004.
