BAA's chief executive Mike Clasper, today called for joined-up international action to resolve aviation's climate change impacts.

Giving evidence to the influential House of Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee, Mr Clasper told MPs that while aviation's greenhouse gas emissions were currently small, they were set to grow and that Governments, airlines and airports should have a much more joined-up approach to findings solutions.

Mr Clasper said:

"The UK aviation industry and EU airports are increasingly joined up in their approach to climate change, but EU airlines and governments still have some way to go to agreeing the best way to deal with aviation's global warming effects.

"As a first step, we advocate integrating aviation's carbon dioxide emissions into the EU Emissions Trading Scheme from 2008. But there is a range of smart solutions to other impacts, and industry and governments should work together on these. "Where there is still scientific uncertainty – such as on the upper atmosphere impacts of water vapour – we need properly-funded research, supported by the European Commission, EU governments and industry, to make sure we fully understand these effects and can design the right solutions to deal with them.

"A long-term approach to aviation and climate change will enable the industry to provide the growth which is so important to our economies and societies in a manner consistent with addressing this growing global problem."
