British Airways customers could soon be able to travel from the UK to Shanghai, as the airline announces plans for a new service.

If the move is approved by Chinese authorities, flights will take place five times a week between Heathrow and Shanghai in the summer.

In addition, the airline's Heathrow to Beijing and Heathrow to Hong Kong services are to increase in frequency from four to 16 and from 17 to 21 respectively.

BA's commercial planning director Robert Boyle told the Scotsman: "We have flown to both Hong Kong and Beijing for many years and are keen to start services to Shanghai.

"The city is the powerhouse of the Chinese economy and, as the economy continues to grow, we believe there will be a great demand for our flights."

New flight plans follow China's decision last week to make the UK one of its Approved Destination Status countries, meaning more Chinese tourists can come to Britain.
