News: New Stansted public transport interchange

Stansted Airport's public transport facilities have been boosted by Uttlesford District Council's approval of a new Passenger Transport Interchange (PTI).
The PTI, designed by architects Foster and Partners, will provide passengers with a high-quality coach and bus station, offering vastly improved facilities, layout, comfort and levels of customer service. Work on its construction will commence later this year.
The centrepiece of the development will be an overarching canopy, constructed from similar materials as used at the Eden Project, covering the PTI complex and improving passenger protection from the elements.
Nicola Hooper, BAA Stansted's Head of Transportation, said:
"I'm delighted the new PTI has been approved and would like to thank all our stakeholders, in particular the Airport Transport Forum, Bus & Coach Working Group (chaired by Essex County Council) and National Express, who helped achieve this success. Its design is a major step change in quality and will vastly improve the passenger experience.
"The airport has recently seen a significant growth in the quantity and quality of its coach service operation and we believe this new facility will help secure continuing improvements.
"Stansted's own surface access strategy focuses on improving accessibility to the airport and encouraging air passengers and staff to use public transport. "We are already the leading UK airport for air passenger public transport use and this innovative new facility will, I believe, set the standard for the 21st century, and encourage even more airport users to utilise the available services.
"Our delivery of this project also ensures we successfully meet yet another of our section 106 planning conditions relating to our consent to grow Stansted to serve 25 million passengers a year."
Stansted Airport has a higher take up rate of public transport than any other UK airport. Currently, 38.6% of Stansted's air passengers use public transport to get to and from the terminal, with 28.4% using the train, and 10.2% arriving by bus/coach.
