Liverpool John Lennon Airport is today celebrating two further milestones following the publication of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)’s report on UK Regional Air Services. The report shows that John Lennon is now the third largest regional airport in the UK for international scheduled passengers.
3.32 million passengers passed through the airport last year, compared to just 474,000 in 1994 – a massive 601% increase and the second highest growth rate of any UK airport during this 10 year period.
And Liverpool had another reason to celebrate today as Ryanair added their latest destination from John Lennon Airport with the launch of their daily flights to Milan. The route brings the total number of destinations operated by Ryanair from the airport up to 13.
To mark the occasion, the Honorary Consul of Italy, Nunzia Bertali, who is based on Merseyside, joined with airport, Ryanair and The Capital of Culture Company staff to both give the send off for the first departing passengers to Milan and to welcome those arriving from Italy. The Italian Consulate provided a variety of Italian cuisines for passengers to enjoy prior to boarding the flight.
Commenting on the report’s findings, Neil Perky, the Managing Director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said, "It came as a surprise to even us that Liverpool is third in the UK regional airport league table for international scheduled flights. The North West has a double reason to celebrate given that both Manchester and Liverpool are now in the top three."
