In a statement released this morning, Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O’Leary said: “The Lord Mayor’s Office’s recent attempts to block Ryanair advertising came to light when our media buyers in
“Despite an attempted U-turn at the weekend by the Lord Mayor’s Office, claiming that their statements had been made “in error”, Ryanair received a further request on Monday 7 February requesting that we withdraw our advertisement orders for fear of recrimination from the city offices.”
The statement continued: “The Lord Mayor’s Office clearly has a conflict of interest as Lord Mayor Joachim Erwin is also a member of the Board of Dusseldorf International Airport and is misusing his office to block competition from Ryanair at Airport Weeze. In so doing he is:
1) Denying freedom of speech;
2) Denying the residents of
3) Stifling tourism and job creation by blocking Airport Weeze and Ryanair competition.
“In 2005 Ryanair will:
1) Carry 700,000 passengers through Airport Weeze;
2) Sustain 700 new jobs in the
3) Bring savings of £807M over fares of high fare airlines.”
Mr. O’Leary concluded: “The Mayor’s Office should be supporting free speech, consumer choice, competition and job creation; not blocking them.”
