Some of this decrease could be attributed to the fact that 2004 was a leap year.  Taking this factor out of consideration, the airport is showing growth of 1.8%, rather than a decline of the same amount.

Although there was an overall reduction of 5.4% in the number of scheduled passengers during February, growth was achieved on scheduled services to the Indian sub-continent, which saw an increase of 2.4% and on domestic routes, which grew overall by 1.8%.

Other scheduled routes which saw a rise in traffic over the month were; Prague (+160.5%), Milan (+49.1), Amsterdam (+27.3%), Tashkent (+37.8%), Rome (+8.4%), Larnaca (+17.6%), Munich (+38.1%), and Bratislava (+32.5%), due to new launches and increased frequencies.

When will flights growth take off from Birmingham?Charter traffic was down by 3.9% overall compared with February 2004. However, growth was achieved on services to Barbados (+210.7%), Austria (10.0%), Bulgaria (+79.2%) and Switzerland (+7.4%). This is due to the ski season and winter cruises.

Scheduled traffic accounted for 80% of the total February figure while charter passengers made up the remaining 20%.

Despite the current reductions in flight traffic, the airport's management is looking forward to a busy Summer 2005 season. New flights from bmibaby, flybe, Monarch Scheduled and MyTravelLite should all demonstrate significant growth in the no frills market. Meanwhile, long haul scheduled traffic should also grow, as Air India have recently announced the first direct scheduled services between Birmingham, India and Canada. This is in addition to the extremely popular flights from Birmingham to New York and Dubai, operated by Continental airlines and Emirates respectively. Both of these routes will be operating a double daily frequency during 2005.
