Flybe has announced that Jim French will be taking over as Chairman of the company in addition to his role as Managing Director, with effect from 31st March 2005, following the retirement of David Brown. Mr French said: “Following the sad death of our founder Jack Walker in September 2000, David agreed to come out of retirement and take on the role of Chairman on a short term basis. In the intervening period, the airline industry has gone through some very challenging times as a result of competition from the Low Cost carriers, world events and fuel prices. David has worked closely with his management team to guide the company through substantial change which resulted in the creation of flybe. Flybe has become a major success within European Aviation and is one of the first of the new generation of schedule airlines in Europe which blended together the best features of the Traditional Airlines and the Innovations of the Low Cost Airlines. In tandem with the transformation of the airline, the aircraft engineering operation based at Exeter has also been transformed as a result of a £10M investment in new facilities. Flybe Aviation Services now operates from one of the most modern regional aviation facilities in Europe. I am delighted to be taking over from David, with whom I have enjoyed working for over twelve years. I am also very pleased that David has agreed to stay as a non executive director as I will value his counsel in the future.”
