bmibaby logoBmibaby is celebrating three years in operation this weekend. The airline, which first began flights from East Midlands Airport on 20 March 2002, has grown to become the UK's second largest low cost carrier with over 7.6 million passengers travelling on its services since launch.

The airline has expanded rapidly, establishing bases at 5 UK airports: Nottingham East Midlands, Birmingham International, Manchester, Cardiff and Durham Tees Valley (formerly Teesside).

bmibaby 737 offering flights from BirminghamNottingham East Midlands remains bmibaby's largest base, and the airline continues to offer the widest range of routes at EMA. The airline now offers over 1,000 flights every month from East Midlands to 12 European destinations, including Alicante, Amsterdam, Belfast (International), Cork, Edinburgh, Faro, Glasgow (International), Jersey, Malaga, Murcia, Palma and Prague.

David Bryon, bmibaby's managing director, commented:
"bmibaby is a real success story.  We have consistently delivered strong year on year growth by building a powerful brand with a reputation for quality service. We capped a fantastic 2004 by being crowned best 'No Frills' carrier for the second year running, and have had an even stronger start to 2005 carrying over half a million passengers in January and February combined.

We have big growth ambitions for the future, and remain committed to developing a wide network of flights to European destinations.

Everyone at bmibaby is naturally proud of our achievements in three years, and we want to share our success with the passengers who have helped to establish the airline as the UK's number 2 low cost carrier."

To celebrate it's third birthday, bmibaby has planned a bumper "three for all" seat sale, where every day for 6 days 3,333 free seats (excluding the usual charges) will be available across selected routes.

  • Comment:

Bmibaby were criticised when they launched for being BMI's "late response" to go / easyJet moving on to their patch and offering a range of cheap flights from Nottingham East Midlands.

The airline has clearly grown up to become a serious player
