News: [Site update] Missing flight route maps due

Flightmapping's aim has always been to show flight route options to all destinations from UK airports.
Commentators have often pointed out that keeping on top of all this must be like "painting the Forth Bridge", and in many cases it is.
There are several destinations which have been left off our maps, despite being very popular holiday spots.
These include:
- Greece
- Turkey
- The Canary Islands
- Cyprus
- Hawaii
- Scottish Highlands & Islands
With the exception of Hawaii, the reason why flights to the other destinations have been left off has been because of the difficulty in updating these maps by hand. Hawaii was just too far west, but we should be able to add it onto the USA flight routes map.
Flightmapping has recently employed a database builder, and this is resulting in many areas of the site being overhauled.
The first section of the site to be updated has been the flights news section. This is now updated regularly, usually several times each day, as flight routes news comes in.
The current aim is for most of the maps to be updated on a weekly basis, usually around the end of the week, when a flights news summary will be produced.
When we re-launch our flight routes maps, they will be largely database driven, and will therefore contain a great deal more information than they do at present.
Full details are being kept "under wraps", but as a minimum, each new flight routes map will include:
- All airports in each city or region which offer passenger flights.
- Airport code, full name & location details.
- Interactive "departures board" style lists of routes, airlines and frequencies.
- Links to a wider range of booking options.
I hope to have the first of these new route maps launched by early April. This will probably be for flights to Greece, followed by flights to the Canary islands.
