Flybe are starting flights today between Norwich and Edinburgh, offering direct competition with the existing Eastern Airways services. This is in addition to their flights from Norwich to Belfast, whose start date was brought forward to February due to exceptionally high demand.
Norwich is the latest in a series of regional airports which have been opened up by Flybe, despite other airlines not showing much interest. The real advantage that Flybe have is that they can make flights from these airports work, largely due to the excellent fuel efficiencies and low operating costs of their new Q400 turboprop aircraft.
Before the arrival of Flybe in airports like Norwich, Southampton and Exeter, the only scheduled flights available were with tradtional high fares airlines, or with regional commuter airlines who tended to focus more on the business market. Flybe offer passengers the opportunity to take flights from their local airport at reasonable prices, without having to take the arduous trek into London. Daily flights to Glasgow will start on 16th June, with a 5x weekly service to Jersey operating from 7th May.
Speaking exclusively to Flightmapping two weeks ago, Trevor Eady, Norwich Airport's commercial director, said that he hoped to see additional routes announced by Flybe later in the year. He tipped flights to Paris as being a likely option, followed by a range of other European cities which he expected to be popular with Norwich residents.
A spokesperson for Norfolk Attractions, the umbrella tourism promotions group for facilities around Norwich, also told Flightmapping how their members were working together to attract more visitors into the region. Flights from Scotland in particular were operating with an even balance of inbound and outbound passengers.
