Bournemouth Airport is now gearing itself up for its busiest summer ever, thanks in particular to last week's arrival of low fares airline Thomsonfly.com.
495,000 passengers passed through the terminal in 2004. This figure is set to double, now that Thomsonfly.com have started operating its scheduled flights to Majorca, Malaga, Valencia, Faro, Pisa, Paris and Amsterdam.
“It’s no exaggeration to say that this is one of the most important days in the airport’s 60 year history,” said Peter Duffy, Bournemouth Airport’s Acting Managing Director.
“And because we will be seeing such a huge increase in passenger numbers we have made significant changes to the terminal building to meet this demand.”
The terminal modifications will greatly improve the facilities for those departing from, and arriving at, the airport:
- The ‘landside’ part of the terminal now consists of 12 check in desks, the bureau de change, WH Smith, and the O’Briens Sandwich Bar.
- The ‘airside’ facilities for departing passengers now consist of the Food Village, a conservatory-style Bar des Voyageurs, an improved duty free/tax free shop, additional toilet facilities and comfortable seating for 700 passengers.
- Arriving passengers will also see the benefits of these modifications. The immigration hall has been increased in size and a third baggage carousel has been installed in the arrivals hall. And those meeting passengers off flights will now have a dedicated ‘arrivals lounge’.
“Everyone at Bournemouth Airport has worked extremely hard to ensure that the work was completed on time and they are all to be congratulated,” added Peter Duffy.
“But it’s not just the airport that will benefit from the arrival of Thomsonfly.com,” he continued. “New jobs have been created and we expect to see a large influx of European visitors coming into this area on holiday. All of this is excellent news for local businesses and tourism, and will help attract further investment and industry into the region.”
