News: Thomsonfly celebrate one year of flights

Budget airline Thomsonfly yesterday celebrated one year of operating flights from Coventry Airport.
The most successful destination has been Jersey, which has had a twice daily service since the airline launched its first flights at the end of March 2004. Málaga has been the most popular of the European mainland destinations.
Of the new flights which were announced late last year for the 2005 summer programme, Thomsonfly’s marketing director Maria Heckel commented that the Faro flights were selling particularly well, especially as the Algarve is an extremely popular location for golfers.
Mrs Heckel also commented on how the majority of passengers using Thomsonfly were from the local area, and that the airline had brought in some 60,000 passengers on inbound flights from Europe. The airline was establishing itself with two new bases at Bournemouth, which opened last week, and Doncaster Sheffield (Robin Hood airport), which opens for passenger flights on 28th April.
As well as opening up more opportunities for regional passengers to take cheap flights from their local airports, Mrs Heckel commented on how operating from three regional UK bases would give the airline more opportunity to work with local tourism promotion authorities to increase the number of inbound visitors. She said that it would be especially worthwhile to focus this around the destinations to which Thomsonfly operate services from all three of their three bases, especially Paris, Faro, Málaga and Valencia.
