“By now, passengers are well and truly used to the concept of no-frills flights, as most airports across the UK have at least one no-frills airline operating from them. As airports expand to cater for this growth, the concept of the no-frills airport is also developing rapidly, and I'm proud to say that what we are doing here in Coventry can be regarded as the original low-cost terminal, if almost by default. Many passengers are initially puzzled at the setup that we have here, although our surveys have shown that passenger reaction to such a basic facility has been overwhelmingly supportive.
Airports across Europe are undergoing dramatic changes to respond to the demands of airlines, and Coventry intends to lead the way. No frills certainly does not mean no passengers, as we have now had some 650,000 passengers passed through our terminal. We are also learning new things about the operation of a terminal building of this size on an almost daily basis, and we know that other airports are looking at what we do very closely,”
Coventry airport's customer services director, Mike Morton, also said how surprised he was at the positive reaction he had received from passengers:
“What we are finding is that because our terminal is so small, passengers are finding that these "cosy" facilities are actually rather welcoming. We are able to board passengers very rapidly after check-in has closed, and this means that even if we have four aircraft on the ground, we very rarely need to worry about having four planeloads of passengers sat inside the departure lounge.”
Marc Bond, managing director of airport caterers Skypartners Ltd, also commented on how all the passengers appreciated the airport’s facilities:
"Customers appreciate the friendly and personal service we can offer here, and I am now getting used to speaking to several regular passengers each time they come through the terminal."
