Virgin Atlantic has launched its thrice-weekly service from London to Mumbai (Bombay).
Sir Richard Branson used the inaugural flight on Thursday to announce his interest in entering the domestic aviation market in the country.
While, under Indian law, Virgin are not allowed to invest in India's domestic airlines, Sir Richard has been advised that he may invest in any airline he chooses as an individual.
BBC News reported that the airline magnate believes the Indian domestic market is a key area for investment. He is also exploring communication's options in the country with potential plans to bringing Virgin Mobile to India.
He confirmed his interest in sponsoring the airline sector and has welcomed the arrival of new "no-frills" airlines in the domestic market, which would serve to reduce prices for domestic air travel in India.
Sir Richard is yet to decide which airline to partner.
Virgin Airlines currently has a daily flight between London and Delhi, and is also looking at eventually extending the new London to Mumbai service to a daily flight.
