bmi to develop further India long haul network from Heathrow
- UK and Indian governments praised for creating opportunities for greater competition
bmi is determined to develop its long haul network from Heathrow following an agreement reached between the UK and Indian Governments that was concluded in Delhi today (13 April). An agreement was reached to open up more routes to competition and the opportunity for greater frequencies on existing routes.
The airline has praised the two governments for making the brave move to progressively opening up the growing market between the UK and India.
Nigel Turner, bmi chief executive said:
"The talks between the two governments have created a tremendous opportunity for bmi to deliver much needed new competition into this market. India is a vibrant country with a rapidly developing economy that will benefit greatly from the injection of new genuine competition.
"We will now evaluate how bmi can take advantage of these new opportunities and announce shortly what our commitment and plans will be. An increase of our four-times weekly service to Mumbai to a daily service will certainly be a priority.
"It is a little disappointing that a full open skies agreement could not have been agreed upon. However, we should congratulate the two governments in making evolutionary rather than revolutionary steps towards full and free open access to the UK- India market. It is an example that we believe should be considered for other restricted markets such as the UK-US."
