Passengers on board Thomsonfly's inaugural flight from Robin Hood airport Doncaster Sheffield expressed their admiration for the new facility, and to the range of routes which were available to them.
Tim Holgate from near Hull commented on how Robin Hood airport offered many more flights than Humberside.
"Humberside has never really developed to offer much in the way of cheap flights to the sun, and I suppose that there isn't enough population nearby to fill them. Other airports in the North of England are a real hassle to get to, especially Leeds Bradford. I don't mind going to Manchester so much, but it is still a two-hour drive across the top of the Pennines, using the congested M62. I have even taken flights from Liverpool before in order to get to Belfast, so I would really welcome direct flights to Northern Ireland from Doncaster."
Mr Holgate was travelling with his partner Ruth, and daugther Isabelle, who had the distinction of being the youngest passenger on the first flight from the country's youngest airport.
When asked if there any other ways in which the airport might improve, Mr Holgate said
"I think it would be nice if they made more play on the history of the Finningley site. Perhaps they could put up some black-and-white photos of when it operated as an air base. People should never forget the importance of this, and the fact that many people left the airport never to return."
Don and Margaret Baker from Coal Aston near Sheffield were taking advantage of the opportunity to visit Majorca on the inaugural flight. The couple, who were used to taking flights from other airports such as Manchester, Nottingham East Midlands and Birmingham, said that they found Doncaster much easier to use, and very easy to get to. When asked what other flights they would like to see from the airport, Mr Baker said that he would like to see more flights to long haul destinations, or at least the chance to take connecting flights via another city, such as Amsterdam.
