Liverpool John Lennon Airport is getting ready for what is expected to be the busiest day in its history. In what has been codenamed ‘Operation Turkish Delight’ by airport management, some 10,000 Liverpool fans will descend on the airport next week as they fly out to Istanbul to support Liverpool in their bid to win the UEFA Champions League.
Over 80 flights will be departing from and returning to Liverpool John Lennon Airport before and after the game, operated by 19 different airlines from all over Europe including, Monarch Airlines and Excel Airways from the UK, LTU and Aeroflight from Germany, Iberworld and Futura from Spain, and Air Slovakia.
Some flights of supporters will leave on Monday as will the Liverpool team, with more departing on Tuesday and the majority early on Wednesday morning. The greatest concentration being on Wednesday 25th May, with 17 flights carrying over 4,200 fans scheduled to depart over a 2 hour period between 5:00am and 7:00am
A number of different aircraft types will be used for this operation including a 374 seat Airbus A330, 361 seat Airbus A300, 309 seat Boeing 767 in addition to numerous Boeing 757’s, 737’s and MD 90’s and MD83’s
Neil Pakey, Managing Director of Liverpool John Lennon Airport said, "We have seen nothing like this before. It is as though half the City is moving out to Istanbul for the day. This is a great example of what the Airport can handle and how in partnership with the tour operators, airlines and their representatives we can work as a team to accommodate so many supporters to fly from their local airport".
