Ryanair have announced a massive multi year expansion plan for its base at Frankfurt Hahn. By 2012, the airline plans to have 18 based aircraft at Hahn, and to operate over 50 routes, carrying 8 million passengers per year. With this investment, Frankfurt Hahn will overtake Dublin to become Ryanair’s second largest airport base.
Announcing this major expansion, Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s CEO said:
“Between 2006 and 2012, Ryanair is committed to an investment of $1 billion in new aircraft at Frankfurt Hahn. With over 50 routes, 8 million passengers and 8,000 jobs this is the single biggest investment in German aviation by a non German company and will make Frankfurt Hahn one of the largest airports in Germany and Germany’s fastest growing airport. Ryanair will also provide a loan of €12.5 million in respect of 50% of the total capital expenditure on the new passenger terminal at Frankfurt Hahn and will also locate a Ryanair maintenance facility at the airport.
Although no new routes have been confirmed at this stage, it seems likely that Ryanair will seek to open up flights to Frankfurt Hahn from many of the other UK airports where they have operations.
