Low cost airline Wizz Air have announced plans to expand their operations from Liverpool John Lennon Airport with new flights to the Polish coastal city of Gdansk and increased frequency on their existing flights to the Polish capital Warsaw and Katowice.
Wizz Air launched flights to Poland from Liverpool less than 12 months ago, and have already carried over 65,000 passengers in this time on their flights to and from Warsaw and Katowice. The success of these two routes has given the airline the confidence to grow their business from Liverpool, with the airline adding three weekly flights to Gdansk in the north of Poland, located on the Baltic Sea coast. The airline is also increasing the frequency of its flights to Warsaw and Katowice from three to five each week. Annual passenger throughput on Wizz Air flights between Liverpool and Poland is set to double, with over 160,000 passengers expected to travel on the Wizz Air routes over the coming 12 months.
The airline’s existing services between Liverpool and Poland have seen around 40% of passengers originate from Poland, with many believed to be visitors taking advantage of the low cost fares and the opportunity to visit Merseyside and North West England for the first time. Liverpool will be the second UK city to be served by Wizz Air from Gdansk, with the airline already opearting flights to London Luton from there. Gdansk is the capital of the Pomeranian province of Poland and an important administration centre. The city has much in common with Liverpool - as well as being the country’s maritime capital, it is renowned for its wide variety of cultural activities and events.
The new Gdansk-Liverpool flights will commence on 2 March 2006.
