Abu Dhabi government owned Etihad Airways is set to enhance its presence in the United Kingdom by launching daily flights from Manchester to Abu Dhabi in the spring of 2006. The new Manchester flights will complement Etihad’s existing daily flights from both London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
“ We are delighted to be starting services to Manchester. The route will provide excellent links between the UAE, the north of the UK, Asia and the Far East. It is yet another international route being offered by Etihad, ensuring business and leisure travellers have access to the best global destinations,” says Ian Ferguson-Brown, Etihad’s head of corporate communications.
The airline believes that Manchester, which currently handles over 22 million passengers a year, is one of Britain’s and the world’s principal airports. The airline will use an Airbus A330 aircraft for the route, carrying around 300 passengers.
As well as offering free bus connections to Dubai, Abu Dhabi is rapidly establishing itself as a major destination in its own right, with the airline estimating that as many as 60% of its passengers on the new Manchester to Abu Dhabi flights will be visiting the UAE as their final destination, rather than just as a transfer point.
For passengers looking for onward connections, Etihad already has a good network of destinations within the Indian subcontinent, further improving links between Manchester and cities such as Karachi, Delhi, Colombo and Bombay (Mumbai). Additionally, Etihad provide onward connections further east to Bangkok and Manila. Local connections are also available to Middle Eastern cities such as Damman (Saudi Arabia), Doha (Qatar), Bahrain, and the Omani capital of Muscat.
