Ryanair has announced a new ten year deal committing it to develop services at Brussels Charleroi Airport until 2016. As part of this agreement the Irish budget airline will base a fourth aircraft in Charleroi. Ryanair also plan to launch five new routes next spring, from Charleroi to Faro, Nimes , Malaga , Salzburg and Valencia .
Ryanair's chief executive Michael O'Leary said Brussels Charleroi had been transformed from an unknown airfield into the fastest growing airport in Belgium since the airline's arrival in 2001. Mr O'Leary added: “ The passenger growth at Charleroi airport is unrivaled elsewhere in Belgium and has been achieved as a result of Ryanair's massive investment in aircraft and international advertising to promote low fare flights to and from Brussels Charleroi.”
A new terminal capable of handling five million passengers a year is set to open at the airport in 2007.
No new routes have been confirmed yet between the UK and Brussels Charleroi. Earlier in the year, O'Leary said that Ryanair would be interested in re-instating the Liverpool to Brussels Charleroi flights, although the airline has since launched several other new destinations from their Merseyside hub.
