American Airlines have shelved plans to run flights between the northeast of England and New York . American say their decision was prompted by spiralling fuel costs and poor economic conditions within the US airline industry.
The route from Newcastle to New York 's JFK airport was set to start on May 2. Passengers who have already bought tickets will be offered alternative flights or a full refund.
American Airlines European vice president Craig Kreeger said the news will be a considerable disappointment to people in the northeast, adding: “We remain convinced that a route serving Newcastle would be an attractive opportunity given more stable market conditions in our industry.”
Newcastle International Airport chief executive John Parkin said he was hugely disappointed, but remains confident a route between Newcastle and New York can still be established. Mr Parkin said: “We consider this to be a temporary set back to Newcastle 's plans to become a much needed transatlantic gateway for the northeast region.”
