Budget airline Easyjet have announced that they will offer cheap flights to Lisbon for the first time. A new daily route to the Portugues capital will start from Luton on 1st March. Additionally, the airline has announced new flights from Lisbon to Milan and Paris, joining already confirmed routes to Geneva and Basle, taking the airline's planned route network of flights from Lisbon to five European cities.
In a slight jibe at rival Ryanair, who constantly like to draw attention to the price difference between themselves and Easyjet, Andrew Harrison, easyJet Chief Executive said:
“Some 35 million Europeans will take advantage of easyJet’s unique combination of the lowest fares to the best-located airports this year; in fact, no other airline saves their passengers time and money on the same scale as easyJet."
Before being taken over by Easyjet, budget airline Go used to operate flights to Lisbon from London Stansted. Despite having immense appeal as a short break destination, as well as being situated near resorts such as Estoril, Lisbon has so far had very little attention from UK based budget airlines. Monarch Scheduled are the only other operator to offer non-stop flights to Lisbon from the UK. Other European budget airlines, such as Air Berlin and Virgin Express, offer flights to Lisbon from other continental cities.
