Ryanair have launched a stinging attack against Cork Airport following the airport’s decision to raise airline charges. Cork Airport Authority recently announced a range of cost increases for various services at the airport, including a 300% hike in the rental charge of check-in and ticket desks.
Ryanair say the airport is trying to pass the cost of its new 180 million euro (£125 million) “Taj Mahal-like” terminal onto the airlines, and is no longer competitive compared to other European airports.
Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Michael Cawley, said:
“Cork Airport is in danger of pricing itself out of the market with these outrageous price increases. Cork Airport has to realise that it is in competition with hundreds of other airports throughout Europe for passengers whose only concern is to get low fares."
Mr Cawley added:
“This is an idiotic way to run an airport and is a direct result of the Government's transport policies of overspending and making its regional airports uncompetitive by building lavish and expensive facilities which passengers and visiting tourists are not prepared to pay for.”
