More direct flights to Delhi (via Amritsar) are on offer from Air India, who also offer cheap flights to Toronto from Birmingham |
After a year of operating flights from Birmingham, Air India has announced that it will be doubling its Birmingham to Amritsar & Delhi and Birmingham to Toronto services from 1st May 2006.
The airline has already carried more than 100,000 people since it started flights from Birmingham in June last year. The Indian carrier will double its frequencies, offering six weekly flights to Amritsar & Delhi and six per week to Toronto.
Birmingham is the airline's only UK operation outside London. Leader of Birmingham City Council, Councillor Mike Whitby, campaigned to increase these services from the outset, and recently wrote a letter to the Indian Aviation Minister on behalf of the Midlands' Asian community to encourage more traffic between Birmingham and India. Mr Whitby said:
"The key to a thriving city is having a successful airport which provides excellent air transport links throughout the world. Birmingham is a truly multicultural city so I welcome this news on behalf of Birmingham's Asian community, and urge people to make use of the growing number of long-haul services available from their local airport."
Air India will continue to operate Boeing 777-200 aircraft on the route, which hold 292 passengers in a mixed configuration.
