Coventry Airport has been given the go ahead to keep its temporary terminal after being given retrospective planning permission following a marathon public inquiry.
The Government stepped in after the airport and the local authority, Warwick District Council (WDC), clashed over whether planning permission was needed for the temporary passenger facilities. The District Council took enforcement action against airport operators TUI following the start of Thomsonfly’s passenger flights in March 2004, calling for the terminal to be closed.
The matter then went to the High Court, where WDC were heavily criticised for taking “draconian” measures against the airport, before being handed to the Deputy Prime Minister’s office for a final decision following the longest ever public inquiry over enforcement action. A second inquiry over plans to build a permanent terminal at Coventry Airport is ongoing.
Coventry Airport chairman, Bill Savage, said:
“We see this as a very strong confirmation that passenger operations at Coventry Airport are supported by the Government and although we welcome this support we now need to concentrate on the current planning inquiry to seek approval for a new terminal building to replace the Interim Passenger Facility, increase passenger service levels and provide an appropriate facility that has tremendous support from the vast majority of Coventry and Warwickshire residents and businesses.”

The decision to grant approval for Coventry Airport’s temporary terminal, which was made by Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, will no doubt be welcomed by the hundreds of thousands of passengers who have already used the airport.
