The 40th anniversary of the first passenger flights from Glasgow Airport has been celebrated this week with the opening its multi-million pound Skylounge.
The development, which comprises of a holiday lounge for families, and a prestige business lounge, is part of a major expansion of the airport’s international pier.
The first phase of the extended international departure lounge, which includes a new bar and restaurant, will also open this week. Extra retail units and seating areas will also be added as part of the ongoing expansion and refurbishment of the lounge.
Alan Barr, managing director of Glasgow Airport, said: “The opening of Skylounge, and the expansion of the international pier, represents the first phase of our longer ambition to transform Glasgow Airport into a modern, 21st century gateway for Scotland.”
This month sees the launch of several new flights from Glasgow, and the return to Glasgow of two of its transatlantic carriers.
From May 3 Easyjet will fly daily to Berlin Schoenefeld. The service is one of 15 new flights being offered this year as part of Glasgow’s busiest summer ever. Scottish low fares airline Flylobespan is also offering new services to Pula (Croatia), Athens, Heraklion (Crete) and Mahon (Menorca) and, from next month, a new daily service to Orlando.
Meanwhile US Airways and American Airlines are set to re-start their summer flights to Philadelphia and Chigaco respectively.
