British Airways franchise partner British Mediterranean Airways (BMed) is launching its first flights to west Africa this winter with a new service from London Heathrow to Freetown in Sierra Leone via the Senegalese capital Dakar. The thrice-weekly route starts on October 30.

They will be the only scheduled services providing direct links between the UK and the two countries and will bring BMed’s overall network coverage to 18 destinations in the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe and Africa.

  • Comment:

These new routes are likely to do very well, considering how difficult it can be to get decent value on flights to many West African destinations. Sierra Leone has not been without its political problems of late, so seeing British Airways operate direct flights to Freetown should certainly be a major boost for the country. The former French colony of Senegal has tended to have better links from Paris than London, but the launch of new flights from the UK to this increasingly popular destination are very welcome.
