Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has accused the Government of bringing London’s airports to the point of collapse in the aftermath of Thursday’s (August 10) terror sting. Mr O’Leary said the security measures imposed in recent days have been “heavy handed” and that continued cancellations of UK flights would be a victory for extremism.
Adding: “The goal of these terrorists and extremists is not just to kill but also to disrupt the economic life of Britain. The Government, by insisting on these heavy handed security measures, is allowing the extremists to achieve many of their objectives. It is vital that the Government works with the UK airports and airlines to prevent the collapse of the London airports.
“If there is a threat to US flights or from specific extremist groups then this is where the extra security measures and the extra body searches should be targeted.”
Mr O’Leary suggested that the body search requirement should be revised from 100% of passengers to the normal 25% of passengers. He said this would still allow any suspect individuals and groups or certain routes to be targeted and allow the main UK airports and the UK air transport system to return to normal.
"The Government must act today otherwise these extremists will have succeeded by disrupting the economic life of Britain, its air transport industry and its citizens. We must not allow these terrorists to succeed," he said.
