Those hoping that the latest terror threats coupled with proposed new environmental legislation will spell the end for cheap flights won’t like what Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary had to say on Friday (August 18).
Many commentators have suggested that the increased security requirements would make it difficult for no-frills airlines to continue operating on tight schedules, which require their aircraft to be turned around and back in the air after just 25 minutes at the terminal, but Mr O’Leary said nothing will stop the growth of no-frills airlines and that they plan to double their growth in the next five years.
A Ryanair spokesman also said the airline would accept emissions trading in principle, but that it needs to be fair. “There is no point in having it without US, Indian and Chinese support. Long-haul flights need to be targeted too – they cause far more damage than short-haul flights,” he added.
