News: Jet2 cancel Manchester to Edinburgh flights
Flights > News > # 962 (18/09/2006)
The budget airline Jet2 is axing its Edinburgh to Manchester flights from the October 1. After Flybe's cancellation of their flights from Liverpool to Edinburgh and Glasgow, Jet2 was the only no-frills airline operating flights between northern England and Scotland.
Manchester to Edinburgh flights will continue to be operated by BA Connect and BMI Regional, who recently increased their frequency on this route to six daily flights.

The axing of this route is perhaps a small victory for the 'traditional' airlines, who are showing that there are certain routes where the low-cost airlines can’t compete. At one end of the scale, any airline will always be keen to attract high spending, short notice, business passengers, but this is always going to be much harder for a no-frills airline when competing against rivals who offer a much higher frequency of service, using smaller business jets which are much quicker to load and unload. At the other end of the scale, the leisure market is much more sensitive to price, yet such a short journey is always going to have a high proportion of the total flight cost devoted to taxes and airport charges.
No-frills airlines can still offer heavily discounted flights if they are able to bring in additional revenue streams, the most important of which his car hire. This is much harder to do on the route between Edinburgh and Manchester - a car is more of a hindrance than a help when visiting Edinburgh. Also, there is no point in flying up to Edinburgh to pick up a hire car to drive around other locations in Scotland – you might as well drive there in your own car.
