A multi-million pound plan to turn Scotland's busiest airport into a “world class gateway” has been unveiled to cope with an expected trebling in passenger numbers over the next 25 years.

Bosses at the BAA Scotland-operated Glasgow International airport (GLA) will spend £290m transforming the site. The project includes a £25m terminal expansion, which is due to start next spring. The plan will focus on the terminal and airfield facilities needed by 2030, when passenger volume is forecast to rise to 24 million. The airport currently offers flights to 90 destinations and handles just under nine million passengers a year.

GLA managing director Alan Barr said the plan would boost Scottish business and tourism and revolutionise the way people travel to and from Glasgow. He said: “It is a responsible plan for growth that means better facilities for our passengers, more jobs for local people, a bigger choice of international destinations for business and leisure travellers, and action to tackle the environmental impacts of aviation.”
