New flights to Malta to start from Liverpool Airport
Air Malta will start a new service from Liverpool to Malta next summer.
The Maltese national airline will offer two flights a week (Monday and Friday) from Liverpool to the Mediterranean hotspot from May 4 until October 26.
Air Malta marketing chief, Brian Bartolo, said the service will attract people from the northwest of England on weekend breaks and give Maltese passengers the chance to visit the 2008 European Capital of Culture.

Air Malta have always had a good presence at UK regional airports, but with Malta having joined the EU in 2004, the long overdue opening up of the island to competition from no-frills airlines has meant that Malta's national carrier has had to sharpen up its act. Ryanair has already announced cheap flights to Malta from Luton, Dublin and Pisa, and there is no doubt that they will be looking at these Liverpool to Malta flights with a close eye. We doubt that Air Malta's once weekly flights would make that much of a difference to Ryanair or Easyjet, as both airlines prefer to operate routes at least three times each week.
Malta’s historical ties with the UK have meant the island has been a very popular tourist destination with British travellers for many years, but it has much tighter limits on capacity than many Mediterranean hotspots because of its size. Would there be enough demand anyway to support more than one weekly flight to Malta from Liverpool? No doubt, we shall see.
