Wizz Air is launching cheap flights to Poland from Coventry airport next summer.
The Eastern European no-frills airline will operate three flights a week from Coventry to Katowice from July 28.
Coventry is currently only served by Thomsonly, and has struggled to attract new airlines because of uncertainty over its long-term future. The government inquiry into whether Coventry should be allowed to build a new passenger terminal ended in August after a marathon seven month battle between the airport and opposition including a local residents group and nearby Birmingham International.
The results of the inquiry are expected early next year, but Wizz’s arrival will be seen as a sure sign that Coventry’s expansion plans are set to be given the green light.
Coventry airport’s chief executive, Alan Robinson, said: “Coventry and the West Midlands region have strong historical links with Poland and a service to Katowice will be great news for the Polish community, businesses and leisure travellers.”
