Fed up with not being allowed to smoke during flights? A German entrepreneur could have the solution.
Chain smoker Alexander Schoppmann has launched Smoker’s International Airways – Smintair – a first class and business class only airline where passengers will be free to smoke without the fear of being arrested when they land.
Schoppmann plans to refit three 560-seat Boeing 747s with just 138 luxury recliners, creating the mother of all smoking rooms. He will even allow crew members to have a cheeky fag or two during flights. Smintair is expected to launch in October 2007, and will offer daily flights from Dusseldorf to Shanghai and Tokyo.
Schoppmann, 55, told the Reuters news agency that demand for such a service is strong, adding: “We get people who say they want to fly with us, even though they have no business in Tokyo or Shanghai.”
If the airline is a success, the former stockbroker hopes to open a chain of hotels, restaurants, pubs and holiday resorts.
