A new study claims Britain's airports could run out of runway capacity within 15 years if aviation growth is left unchecked.
The report by a group of 60 local authorities said most of the UK's airports were located in areas where further growth was difficult, and that developments should be constrained to a smaller number of airports.
The Strategic Aviation Special Interest Group (SASIG) wants the Government to curb growth through increased tax on air travel. SASIS also want rail services to be improved so that taking the train becomes a more viable alternative to short-haul flights.
SASIG's report SASIG chairman councillor Richard Worrall said: "We accept that the UK economy and its people have much to gain from a successful aviation industry. But there is universal recognition that the aviation industry is one of the fastest growing contributors to global warming.
"The government's own Stern report is a stark reminder to us all of the consequences of not taking action now to address the issues.”
