Want to watch your team in the knock-out stages of the Champions League or UEFA Cup next spring? Working out how to get to games on the Continent can take hours, so Flightmapping.com has done the hard work for you, and looked into the flight options for all of the away fixtures involving British teams.
Champions League
Porto v CHELSEA
Ryanair offer two flights a day between London Stansted and Porto, and TAP Air Portugal run a twice daily service from Heathrow. There is a wide range of cheap flights to Faro in the Algarve, but it is a good four hour drive from the far south of Portugal to Porto (even longer by train).
AC Milan vs CELTIC
Ryanair flies every afternoon from Prestwick to Milan Bergamo (30 miles east of the central Milan). There are no other scheduled flights from anywhere in Scotland to Milan or any other city in northern Italy, but there is plenty of competition from the London airports.
PSV Eindhoven v ARSENAL
Dutch national airline KLM operates flights to Eindhoven from Heathrow, and Ryanair fly to Eindhoven from Stansted. There are a huge number of cheap flights available to Amsterdam from London, but bear in mind that it takes about an hour and a half to reach Eindhoven from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport by train.
Lille v MANCHESTER UNITED
There are no flights from Manchester to Lille, but British Airways and SN Brussels offer plenty of options from Manchester to Brussels. From Brussels, the Eurostar to Lille takes just over half-an-hour. Lille is about an hour away from Paris on the TGV, so it is also worth looking into flights from Manchester to Paris Charles de Gaulle as well (BA, Air France or Jet 2).
When these two sides met in the group stages of the last season’s Champions League, Lille opted to play their home fixture at the Stade de France in Paris (see above for flights info from Manchester). Easyjet run two daily flights to Paris from Liverpool.
Barcelona v LIVERPOOL
Easyjet operate two flights a day to Barcelona International airport from Liverpool, which is by far the closest airport to central Barcelona, whilst Ryanair has daily flights to Girona (Barcelona East) and Reus (Barcelona West).
There are also plenty of options from Manchester, including Air Scotland, Jet2 and Monarch Scheduled to Barcelona International, My Travel Airlines and Thomsonfly Charter to Girona, as well as First Choice, and Thomsonfly to Reus.
UEFA Cup
Zulte-Waregem v NEWCASTLE
Waregem is close to the French border in western Belgium. SN Brussels fly from Newcastle to Brussels, and from there it just over an hour to Waregem by train. Business specialist Eastern Airways has two flights a day from Durham Tees Valley to Brussels, but their prices can be pretty hefty. Waregem is also quite close to Lille in northern France, so it might be worth trying to find a cheap flight from Newcastle to London, and then hopping across the Channel on the Eurostar.
Bayer Leverkusen v BLACKBURN
The closest airports to Leverkusen are Cologne-Bonn (15 miles) and Dusseldorf (30 miles). Flights to Cologne are available with HLX from Manchester and Easyjet from Liverpool. BA Connect and Lufthansa offer flights from Manchester to Dusseldorf. Jet2 has regular flights from Leeds to Dusseldorf.
Hapoel Tel-Aviv v RANGERS
There are no scheduled flights from Glasgow to Tel Aviv, so your best option is to go via London, either with El Al from Heathrow or Stansted, or British Airways from Heathrow. You could also consider flying with Lufthansa or El Al via Frankfurt.
Feyenoord v TOTTENHAM
There are plenty of flights from London to Rotterdam (VLM from City, KLM from Heathrow, Transavia Holland from Stansted), but they tend to be business oriented, so can be pricey. Ticket prices are far more competitive on flights from London to Amsterdam. The train from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport to Rotterdam takes just under an hour.
