A Malaysian entrepreneur has launched a new no-frills long-haul airline offering cheap flights between Europe and Asia.
Aviation tycoon Tony Fernandes has set up Air Asia X – a tie-up between Air Asia and Fly Asian Express – and plans to start daily flights this July from London to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur from as little as £41 return (exclusive of taxes and charges).
Fernandes studied at the London School of Economics and worked in the music industry before buying bankrupt government-owned carrier Air Asia in 2001. Air Asia was re-branded as the region’s first budget airline, and has become hugely successful under the 43-year-old’s stewardship. He is also the majority shareholder in Fly Asian Express, a regional airline serving destinations across Malaysia.
The unveiling of Air Asia X comes just months after Oasis Hong Kong launched cheap flights from Hong Kong to London.
