The boss of Europe’s largest regional airline, Flybe, has called for an end to attacks on the UK aviation industry from environmentalists.
Mike Rutter said the damage caused to the environment by UK airlines has been blown out of proportion.
He said: “We need a more balanced perspective within the present debate on the contribution of air travel to the global issue. As the Stern Report confirmed, air travel contributes less than two per cent of global carbon dioxide emissions.
"The UK aviation sector is already paying more than its way. Aviation not only pays for all its infrastructure without any outside subsidy, but we are also now paying environmental taxation through a doubling of Air Passenger Duty. That cannot be said for other forms of transport.”
