News: Air link between London Heathrow and Jersey restored

BMI is launching twice-daily flights between London Heathrow and Jersey this spring, restoring a link that was last offered six years ago.
BMI hopes to attract customers for both point-to-point and onward connecting flights. Passengers will be able to take advantage of a wide range of connecting BMI services at Heathrow, in addition to fellow members of the Star Alliance airline network, and other airlines.
BMI’s chief executive, Nigel Turner, said: “We are delighted to be re-establishing direct air links between Heathrow and Jersey. We have a long history and association with the island and recognise the importance in it having direct links into the world’s busiest international airport.”
The new service takes off on March 25, with flights leaving Heathrow at 7.10am and 6.40pm, and departing from Jersey at 8.40am and 8.35pm.

The restoration of direct flights between Heathrow and Jersey will no doubt be warmly welcomed on the island, which lost its Heathrow link in 2001. The real benefit here is in the onward connections that this new service offers. Currently, Jersey residents looking for onward connecting flights usually have to make do with the more limited range of destinations which are offered at Gatwick. Whilst some passengers also make their own connections through other UK airports like Manchester or Birmingham, Jersey still only has very limited links with mainland European hubs, despite being so close to the continent.
These new BMI flights will be particularly useful for onward connections onto flights with other Star Alliance partners, such as Lufthansa, SAS and United, although we would also expect to see plenty of passengers transfer onto flights operated by BMI’s main rivals, British Airways.
