Easyjet senior managers marked the doubling of Air Passenger Duty yesterday (February 1) by dressing as tax collectors at UK airports.
The managers were on hand to explain to customers why they had to pay this additional tax and highlight why the so called “environmental tax” is unlikely to create any environmental benefits.
An Easyjet spokesman said: “As the Government has, in effect, made Easyjet the tax collector, this is exactly what the airline plans to do.
“During the past few weeks Easyjet has been contacting its passengers to advise them of the additional tax that needs to be paid and whilst the majority of Easyjet passengers have contacted the airline in advance to pay this charge, a small number of passengers will also be paying at the airport prior to travel.”
Air Passenger Duty has doubled from £5 to £10 on all UK domestic and European flights, and from £10 to £20 on flights from the UK to destinations outside Europe.
