News: New Bermuda flights from London

Canadian airline Zoom is set to start twice weekly flights from London to Bermuda this summer.
Zoom’s daily Gatwick to New York JFK service takes off in June, and the no-frills carrier plans to divert two flights a week via Bermuda.
British Airways have enjoyed a long established monopoly on flights between Bermuda and London, a route which attracts large numbers of business travellers and high rolling holidaymakers.
Zoom plans to offer flights from London to Bermuda on Wednesdays and Sundays, subject to being granted a licence by the Bermudan authorities.

Bermuda might have a stereotypical image of being a slice of upper-class Blighty in the middle of the Atlantic, but even if the majority of accommodation in Bermuda is high end, there is always going to be plenty of demand for low-cost flights, from tourists and locals alike.
Zoom's UK subsidiary would be in an ideal position to exploit this market, as its Boeing 767 aircraft offers the right mix of operational economy, without being too large for the route. Any route which has a strong mix of both business and leisure passengers has to be served with a reasonable frequency, and not just a sole weekly service (which explains why Virgin scrapped its weekly flights to the Bahamas earlier this year).
By offering New York flights from Gatwick, Zoom would be entering into a crowded market, where the traditional scheduled operators are often able to offer heavily discounted economy seats. With US immigration already being a massive hassle, the last thing passengers want from London to New York flights is face a diversion via Bermuda on the way. Mind you, we wouldn’t be surprised if some passengers decided to scrap their New York trip, and stay on in balmy Bermuda instead.
