News: New Provence flights from Edinburgh

Jet2 will be launching the first scheduled flights from Scotland to Avignon in southern France this summer.
The budget airline is to start weekly flights to the historic Provencal city every Saturday from Edinburgh on June 23.
Jet2.com chief executive, Philip Meeson, told industry website Travel Mole that the airline had been inundated with requests for direct flights to Provence from its Scottish customers.
He said: "We know that Provence is a Scottish favourite. We are delighted that we have made this possible for the people of Scotland and in fact the north as a whole."

We are sure that this route will prove very popular, but we've always regarded a niche destination like Avignon as Flybe territory. However, this is not the first time that Jet2 have launched routes to destinations which London-centric airlines like Easyjet and Ryanair have left alone - with Chambery being another such example.
Avignon, is actually closer to the heart of Provence than Marseille Provence airport, but the latter has recently opened a budget terminal, aimed specifically at no-frills airlines like Jet2. So why did Jet2 opt for Avignon over Marseille? We would suspect that it is another simple case of finding the best airport deal - Marseille might have a low-cost terminal, but it is still a very busy airport, with domestic flights to Paris departing several times each hour. Jet2 can test the water at Avignon with weekly flights from Edinburgh, and if this route proves popular, we're sure that they will be back for more, just like we've already seen them do at Toulouse.
