British Airways has chosen British built Rolls Royce Trent engines to power its four new Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.
The airline has also signed a long term maintenance agreement with Rolls Royce for the engines.
Rolls Royce beat American rivals General Electric to win the lucrative contract despite the fact that the majority of BA’s current 777 fleet are powered by GE engines.
British Airways commercial director, Robert Boyle, said: "This was a closely fought competition but in terms of cost and ongoing maintenance support, Rolls-Royce came out in front.
"Later this year, we will place a major order for new long-haul aircraft and both Rolls Royce and GE, along with the Engine Alliance, will be competing to provide the engines for those aircraft."

Considering how much BA has historically shown Blairite-style loyalty to our cousins across the pond, it is great to see Britain's flag carrier choosing to buy British again. Of course, a publicly traded company like BA has to follow commercial logic, but there's some much needed PR in this for British Airways as well.
