British Airways is considering joining a consortium to make a takeover bid for the Spanish airline Iberia.
BA, which already owns 10% of Iberia, ruled out making an independent bid for the carrier.
Iberia said last month that the private equity firm Texas Pacific Group was putting together a takeover package worth €3.4 billion (£2.3 billion). German airline Lufthansa are also thought to be interested in making a move for Iberia.
A BA spokesman said: "British Airways has approached a number of private equity companies about making a consortium offer for Iberia.
"Any consortium bid would not involve further capital investment by British Airways. As well as a private equity partner, this consortium is likely to include one or more Spanish partners."
