News: Ryanair axes Stansted flights from Blackpool

Ryanair is axing its twice daily flights between Blackpool and London Stansted on June 3 due to poor sales.
The no-frills giant has carried over 500,000 passengers on the route since it was launched in 2003, but Ryanair said the route was not as popular as they hoped.
Ryanair’s communications chief, Peter Sherard, told the Blackpool Gazette that the recent doubling of air passenger duty (APD) had stung low-cost airlines.
He said: "The reason for pulling our London Stansted flight is simple – it simply wasn't performing well. We fly to hundreds of destinations across Europe and in our latest audit six routes, including the Blackpool to Stansted one, was under-performing.
“It doesn't help when airlines are hit with a number of stealth taxes from the Treasury. Gordon Brown's decision to double APD tax has hit us hard so we have been forced to make some awkward decisions.
Ryanair’s other two routes from Blackpool – Girona and Dublin – will continue as normal.
