Coventry airport is reducing its fees and charges in a bid to attract new airlines.
Coventry is currently only served by Thomsonfly, with Polish budget airline Wizzair launching flights to Katowice next month.
The airport has been hampered by a lengthy government planning inquiry into its plans to build a new terminal capable of handling up to two million passengers per year. The expansion project is
expected to be given the green light later this year, and airport bosses are determined to make Coventry as attractive as possible to airlines.
Landing fees at Coventry Airport have been reduced from £16.30 per metric tonne to £10 per metric tonne. Originally the landing fees for an 80 tonne Boeing 737 aircraft would have been £1340, but with the reduction in landing fees it will now cost £800 to land. The passenger load supplement is also being scrapped for arriving passengers.
Coventry airport’s managing director, Chris Orphanou, said: “This is one way we can demonstrate our commitment to developing our route network. Wizz Air commences services between Coventry to the Polish city of Katowice in July and we are confident that other airlines will realise the appeal of Coventry and follow suit.”
He added: “We have invested more than £5 million in just 18 months at Coventry and we are looking forward to imminent approval for the construction of a new terminal which will increase the capacity for passenger throughput from 0.98 million to two million passengers per annum.”
