News: Flybe in food ban shock
Flights > News > # 1312 (12/06/2007)
Regional airline Flybe has banned passengers from eating their own food aboard its flights.
Flybe has told passengers that only items bought on board may be eaten during flights, claiming the food restriction has been introduced to protect passengers with food allergies.
Passenger watchdog, the Air Transport Users' Council (ATUC) has slammed Flybe’s food ban.
ATUC’s industry affairs manager, James Fremantle said the move was “mean”, adding: "It appears to be a way of forcing passengers to pay extra to buy food. We do not like passengers being forced into a corner like this.
"We do not see why an airline should refuse to let passengers bring on their own food unless there is a health or safety reason to stop them doing so."
A spokeswoman for Flybe said the ban was aimed at foods such as peanuts, following complaints from passengers with allergies about other people eating them.
She said: "As a result of allergens and potential allergies, Flybe seeks to control and discourage passengers from bringing their own food on board."
